  • Abstract
In order to identify early tests - as a part of a more extensive research on holm oak characteristics - the AA. have correlated the size of one and two year-old holm oak seedlings (collar diameter; total-, stemroot-length; total-, stem-, root-, leaves-weight; number of leaves) with altitude and latitude and with acorn size. During the first growing season, different holm oak provenances grow rather evenly and thus significant correlations between acorn size or weight and seedling size or weight seem to be missing. Instead, during the second year the size of many acorns are more or less closely correlated with the size of many seedlings. Site parameters are not found in correlation with seedling characteristics. The number of leaves found in seedlings at the end of the first year remarkably affect length, diameter and weight increments during the second growth season. Though adapted to the environment, local provenances show reduced growth.
