Abstract
A total of 8843 trees were assessed in the 1991 programme, compared to 7644 in 1990. In general, trees were in worse condition than in 1990. Climatic conditions continue to be the most important factor affecting both the short- term and long-term condition of trees in Britain. Individual meteorological events, such as a late spring frost and heavy snow combined with strong winds, had a considerable impact on trees in some areas. There was a continued recovery of severely defoliated Sitka spruce following extensive needle loss caused by the green spruce aphid in 1988-90.
