This Note describes the improvements in mean diameter at breast height (dbh) obtained by respacing a dense 5-year-old crop of naturally regenerated Sitka spruce. The treatments of selective manual respacing by clearing saw and simulated mechanical swiping were applied when the trees were 1.2 to 2.9m tall and were compared with an unrespaced control. Results were assessed 17 years later. Financial benefits from respacing habe been calculated using an approximate fit of the 0.9 x 0.9m crop model to the unrespaced control. A strategy for respacing such dense natural regeneration is suggested.
