The effect of polythene mulching, chemical weeding and hand weeding on the survival and early growth of a range of conifers and broadleaves were compared with an unweeded control on four sites in upland Britain. Weeding improved survival, with the poythene mulching treatment generally giving the best results. Weeding improved the height growth of the birch, sycamore and ash.
