The preliminary results of the 1990 monitoring programme are presented. Altogether, 7644 trees were assessed in the main programme, with a further 1700 trees being examined as part of the standardised European survey. The crown densities of Sitka spruce and oak improved during the course of the year whereas Norway spruce and Scots pine showed little change. Beech deteriorated, a trend that is likely to be atttributable to the droughts of 1989 and 1990. A full assessment of the 1990 programme will be published in due course.
