Abstract
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has included forestry among its considerations and a number of important conclusions have emerged. The total global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the burning of fossil fuels are estimated at more then ca. 5 billion tonnes per year. The world's trees contain between 400 and 800 billion tonnes of carbon. The fluxes of greenhouse gases, particularly CO2, between forests and the atmosphere probably have an important effect on world climate. The potential for the storage of carbon in trees in the UK and continental Europe, and on a global basis, is considered in this publication.
