Abstract
The study has been started in 1978 to investigate the effect of thinning on increment and growth in natural Pinus brutia stands which are not regularly treated from the youth stage. It has been found that silvicultural treatments were effective on diameters at breast height. But basal area perhectare decreases as the intensity of thinning increase. It has been seen that diameter increment is not enough to make up for the basal area loss at the end of thinning period. Therefore in Pinus brutia stands which were not regularly thinned, heavy thinnings are not suitable because of reducing basal area. In such stands, by removing suppressed trees, light thinning may be more approprate.
