The aim of the IGBP International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme book series is to present major results of IGBP research - at both the core-project and the programme-wide level - in a single series. The volumes emphasize the key findings of the programme and each is based on an integration of a large body of work carried out around the world under the auspices of the programme. The IGBP synthesis project, involving most core projects, will produce at regular intervals a set of state-of-the-science volumes on the nature of the changing environment of Earth and prospects for the future.
