In 1978 the occurrence of the nun moth, Lymantria monacha (L.), (Lepidoptera, Lymantriidae) was investigated at 335 forest localities in Czechoslovakia (Bohemia and Moravia) using pheromone traps. It was found that the territory of Bohemia and Moravia could be divided into four areas on the basis of capture of the male moths: 0-100 males, 101-400 males, 401- 700 males, 700 and more males, with Central Bohemia the area of highest occurrence. At altitudes above 500 m the number of moths captured tended to decrease. The results show that pheromone trapping can reveal foci of potential outbreaks of the nun moth.
