In late winter oxygen deficiency occurs frequently in the soil below prepared ski slopes, in the present study it was investigated firstly if and how this oxygen deficiency affects the plants growing there and, secondly, what is the cause for occurence of this oxygen deficiency. The investigations of a number of plant species, which are characteristic for the vegetation of ski slopes, showed that the combination of oxygen deficiency and low temperatures seriously damages the plants and in some cases even causes the death of individuals. As cause for the oxygen deficiency processes could be recognised which are related to the preparation of the ski slopes. The preparation of a wet snow-cover implies the pressing of free water in the pores into the lower layers of the snow, which are still very cold, thus causing the formation of compact layers of ice at the soil surface. This ice-layer inhibits a supply of oxygen into the soil.
