  • Abstract
Winter tourism is essential for the economic wellbeing of the local population in many mountainous regions worldwide. But at the same time, these regions are characterized by sensitive and vulnerable environments, often with a high biodiversity. The future (winter) tourism development as well as the management of the destinations concerned need to find a balance between societal needs and the preservation of the environment despite increasing challenges by climate change. Against this background, the book „Winter Tourism - Trends and Challenges“ was initiated by Ulrike Pröbstl Haider, Harold Richins und Stefan Türk (eds). More than forty authors from North America, Scandinavia and Central and Eastern Europe have contributed a total of 36 chapters, covering a wide range of current issues from strategies and means of climate change adaptation, over the behavior and preferences of tourists, to the sustainable management of skiing areas. The book summarizes long term research by several members of the Institute of Landscape Development, Recreation and Conservation Planning (ILEN).Winter Tourism Forces and Challenges; Winter Tourism Experiences; Winter Tourism Development and Sustainability
