Taper curve models for pine, spruce and birch were estimated using mixed linear models. The taper curve models were tested assuming different dimensions measured. Results showed e.g. that when the diameter at breast height and height are measured the root mean square error of the volume estimate is about equal to the rmse obtained with volume functions. If height is measured only for few sample trees in some cases the volume estimates for tally trees are significantly biased.
