Abstract
Growth, tree top damage and windthrow damage were examined in repeatedly fertilized pine stands in Lapland. The material consisted of six stands in different stage of development growing on sites of different types. The study period covered the first six yeas after the first fertilization. Fertilization increased the growth in mean diameter, basal area and volume. Single fertilization increased the annual volume growth by 1.3 m3/ha (45%) and repeated fertilization at three-year intervals by 1.7 m3/ha (59%). The frequency of growth disturbances on the pines increased after the fertilizations. The increase was greatest in the yound stand, and smallest in the middle-aged stand. Repeated fertilization increased the susceptibility to windthrow damage in stands exposed to the wind.
