Abstract
This survey was compiled as part of a series of trienial statistics, and its purpose is to calculate the regional removals and the flows of commercial roundwood from cutting districts to utilization districts. The data were collected from the roundwood buyers who supplied roundwood for use by industry and for export. The total number of buyers in 1988 was 468. The number of buyers has diminished compared to the earlier surveys during the 1980's, while a few large buyers are continuing to increase their share of the total annual wood procurement. In 1988 the total removal of commercial roundwood was 45.6 mill. m3, 98 per cent of which was supplied for industrial use and less then 2 per cent exported as raw wood. Of the total removal, 20.4 mill. m3 consisted of large-sized timber and 25.0 mill. m3 of cordwood. The forestry board districts of Keski-Suomi, Pohjois-Savo and Pohjois-Karjala were the most important production areas of lare-sized timber. As regards the production of industrial cordwood, the forestry board districts of Pohjois-Savo, Lappi and Pohjois-Karjala were the most significant. On the average 45 per cent of the large-sized timber and 60 per cent of the industrial cordwood were transported for processing outside their production area. The main flows of industrial roundwood were directed into the forestry board districts of Etelae-Karjala, Pohjanmaa and Keski- Suomi, where the industrial use of roundwood was 39 per cent of the total annual consumption of roundwood.
