Available statistics on the number of private forest holdings are presented. On the basis of farm register of the National Board of Taxes, farm and forest register of the National Board of Agriculture and the national forest inventory it is estimated that the number of forest holdings has increased by 20 000 every decade since 1950's. The farm register of the National Board of Taxes is most suitable for continuous monitoring of dismemberment. According to it, in 1988 there were in Finland 431 000 private forest holdings with a minimum of one hectare of forest land. 136 000 holdings, with a total of 491 000 hectares of forest land, were so small that they were exempted from the payment of the obligatory forest management fee. If dismemberment continues with the present pace, the number of forest holdings will grow to 450 000 in the year 2000.
