Die von der Natur erbrachten Ökosystemleistungen haben eine fundamentale Bedeutung für das menschliche Leben: Fruchtbarer Boden für Nahrungs- und Rohstoffproduktion, Trinkwasserverfügbarkeit, der Schutz vor Naturgefahren und die Erholungsleistung der Natur bilden die Grundlage für unsere Lebensqualität. Mit zunehmendem Druck auf die Umwelt werden diese Leistungen knapper. Es ist daher wichtig, ihre Bedeutung aufzuzeigen und verstärkt ins öffentliche Bewusstsein zu rücken. Diese Aufgabe wurde von einigen in der jüngsten Vergangenheit gebildeten Initiativen übernommen (z. B. das Millenium Ecosystem Assessment und der TEEB-Prozess – The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity).Nature’s ecosystem services are of fundamental importance to human lives: fertile soils for the production of food and raw materials, the availability of drinking water, protection from natural hazards and the recreational value of nature form the basis for the quality of our lives. Increasing pressure on the environment leads to an increasing scarcity of these ecosystem services. It is therefore important to demonstrate how valuable they are and to make the public increasingly aware of it. For this purpose several initiatives have been launched in the recent past (e.g. the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment and the TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) process).
