The first chromosome numbers recorded in the Umbelliferae (see Wanscher 1931 and 1932) belonged to two different numerical series, which, in the preceding papers, were looked upon as different evolutionary lines. Now that more numbers are known, these series cannot be maintained any longer, firstly because the term series gives an impression of a postulated, not confirmed, continuity, secondly because these two series, the 8 an 11 series, gibe a wrong idea of a non-existing dualism in the taxonomy, and thirdly because noew, through scanty, data enable us to explain more naturally the numerical variation and evolution of the family.
