Pinus leucodermis and Pinus nigra in Northern Calabria, Italy

P. leucodermis and P. nigra which have been noted in the Lucano-Calabrian Apenines (Italy) are also recorded in all the stations of that region. A comparative anatomical study of their needles established some taxonomic relationships between the indigenous black pine, the Villetta Barrea black pine and the P. nigra subspecies nigricans, laricio and pallasiana. The populations formed by the 2 pines are analyzed from a phytosociological point of view. A formation with P. nigra and Genista sericea is described. The positions of both pines in the stages of vegetation are discussed. The potential utilization of the pines in forestation is also considered.
