Abstract
The Vienna Woods were declared a biosphere reserve in 2005 at the initiative of the Federal Province of Lower Austria and the Federal Province of Vienna. With the support of both federal provinces, Biophärenpark Wienerwald Management has been able to successfully implement a score of projects related to natural habitat management and awareness building. The main purpose s to promote sustainable development in the region from an ecological and social perspective and to preserve the century-old natural and cultural values. Aside from the continuation of time-tested prjecs, such as Biodiversity Day, the conservation of old fruit tree varieties or the maintenance of open country, 2016 saw many new developments. Since last year, every municipality and district has had a Biosphere Reserve ambassador. The first two meetings provided an opportunity not only for an exchange of thoughts and ideas, but also for the initiation of joint projects. The best grape juice of the region as distinguished with an award for the fist time. Grape juice is an alternative to wine and will further strengthen and promote the quality produces from Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve. The somewhat dated Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve website was not only brought up to the latest standard but also made more user-friendly.In this year, two key themes merit particular mention: education for sustainable development and mountain biking at Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve.
