Snow avalanches represent a major natural hazard in snow-covered mountains. Their characteristics depend on terrain and snowpack stability and distribution. The stratification and spatial distribution of the snowpack are influenced by previous and current meteorological conditions, exhibiting temporal variations. In contrast, topographical features generally remain constant. Using high-resolution digital terrain models, terrain features effecting avalanche characteristics can be analysed and detected digitally.
