Der Artikel gibt Einblick in die Entwicklung des Natur- und Umweltschutzgedankens beim Forsttechnischen Dienst für Wildbach- und Lawinenverbauung in Österreich. Dabei wird auf historische Zusammenhänge, die Naturschutzgesetzgebung, das sich ändernde gesellschaftliche Umfeld eingegangen und auf einige in diesem Kontext errichtete Hochwasserschutzprojekte hingewiesen. Im Vordergrund steht die Weiterentwicklung der ökologischen Kompetenz im Dienstzweig. The constant improvement of ecological competence is paramount.
