  • Abstract
In Southern Bavaria between the foreland of the Alpes and the River Danube there is an area of about 50.000 Hektar with stands of mature Norway Spruce apt to regeneration which are partly mixed with Scots Pine and intermediate and suppressed beeches. The character of these stands, however, is that of uniform pure stands. The generally requested consersion into mixed crops by planting or sowing beech group-wise in advance is not statisfying and very expensive. Vanselow chose in several stands, of which three were examined in detail, the following method of converting uniform pure spruce stands into mixed stands: gradual breaking-up of the canopy till 0.5 of the original crown-closure by removal of intermediate, suppressed and mal-formed dominant trees, by fencing, soil preparation in strips, sowing of Sessile Oak (50kg per Hektar), light sowing of Birch seed on snow and sowing and planting of Larch with wide spacing.
