The characterization of soil horizons by the symbols. A, B, C, D, G and g is briefly discussed by the author and the use of additional lowered numerals is suggested to indicate the sequnce of zones. The biological and or chemical properties of a zone, however, shall be indicated by letters with additional lowered letters. The author suggests a key of standard letters as symbols for mor, peat, coarse mould, fine mould, mull-like mould, and chemogen mull. The new symbols K and Ch are introduced in addition to the Hesselmann's indices F and H to characterise the biological and chemical properties of these forms of humus. The author concludes with a discussion of the various factors which have to be considered in a detailed description of soil horizone.
