The author discusses results of the first five years' investigations of the water economy and soil erosion in the Harz Mountains. The study area consists of two watersheds, one having 98% forst cover (Wintertal), the other being clear-cut prior to investigation (Lange Bramke). Results confirm, to some extent, previous findings with respect to run-off and evaporation. Observations referring o the occurrence of high- and low-water differ from those made in the Emmental.
