  • Abstract
During the past two years damages to chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) have been abserved north of the Alps, damages no inferior in severity to those of Southern Switzerland caused by the chestnut-blight (Endothia parasitica). The relationship between these damages and factors of climatic and biotic nature has been investigated in everal disease centres in the regions near Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Geneva in Western Switzerland and Walensee in Eastern Switzerland. From the development of disaese symptoms and the timing of their occurrende it may be concluded that frost effects of recent years are cause of primary importance. The fungi observed in these locationsmay serve as indicators oh the severity pf previous damages. Their occurrence is determinded by both the pathogenicity of the fungi and the envorinment-influenced vitality of the chestnut trees. Armillaria mellea and Diplodina castaneae are considered to be pathogenic fungi of particular importance.
