    In the course of twenty years of mapping of the mammals In the Steyr district (1985-2005) a lot of data were collected. Of the 93 species known to occur in Austria 62 were found by the author in the study area. The present article is devoted to two Orders, insect eaters (Insectivora) and bats (Chiroptera). 1764 observations concerning these orders have been recorded. For all of the species which are mentioned specimens are available. They have been turned over to the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien and their identities have been ascertained there also. Fach of these species is described in a separate chapter and the places where it occurs are marked on a separate map of the study area based on minute-fields. The following 28 species have been found and are described in the present report: Western Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), Eastern Hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor), Pygmy shrew (Sorex minutus), Alpine shrew (Sorex alpinus), Common shrew (Sorex araneus), Miller's water shrew (Sorex minutus), Alpine shrew (Sorex alpinus), Common shrew (Sorex araneus), Miller's water shrew (Neomys anomalus). Water shrew (Neomys fodiens), Lesser white-toothed shrew (Crocidura suaveolens), Bi-coloured white-toothed shrew (Crocidura leucodon), Common mole (Talpa europaea), Lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros), Greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis), Bechstein's bat (Myotis bechsteinii), Natterer's bat (Myotis nattereri), Geoffroy's bat (Myotis emarginatus), Whiskered bat (myotis mystacinus), Brandt's bat (Myotis brandtii), Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii), Common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), Nathusius' pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii), Leisler's bat (Nyctalus leisleri), Noctule (Nyctalus noctula), Northern bat (Eptesicus nilssonii), Serotine (Eptesicus serotinus), Parti-coloured bat (Vespertilo murinus), Barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus), Brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus), Grey long-eared bat (Placotus austrianus).
