Abstract
The factors that regulate or affect the quality and quantity of volatile chemicals released by trees are indirectly related to such problems as photosynthetic efficiency, insect attraction, human allergies, air pollution damage to trees, drought or cold resistance, and species density and diversity. A theoretical consideration of these factors is given. The principle volatiles released by trees are terpene Compounds. Their release is genetically controlled and is modified by many non-genetic factors. Data are presented which show the methods and results of gas chromatographic analyses of liquid and vapor samples from nuraerous tree species. The leaf surface of tree species have also been examined using the scanning electron probe microscope to determine the structure and amounts of waxes present in and around the stomates.
