Abstract
Management of the very productive forests of the Pacific Northwest region of the USA is determined not only by the need to produce wood fibre, but by the need to protect water quality in the regions valuable streams. The greatest potential for water quality impairment in this region of high rainfall and steep terrain comes from sediment generated by erosion as a resultat of road construction, site preparation or timber harvesting. The method of control presently used incorporates legal restrictions on operations enforced by a cadre of forest officers. Considerable research is required to improve the present level of control.
