Strong dimensioned coniferous wood and the processing of sawn timber have been analysed. Important wood properties of round wood and sawn timber have been compared. Results show a restrained wood quality both for currently growing Norway spruce and Silver fir in south-westem parts of Germany. To achieve not only strong dimensioned stems and superior wood quality for different utilisation purpose (esp. bearing strength, defined surface quality), but creates also value for the landowner, this leads to a specific silvicultural strategy including stabile, high-capacity sites, adequate silviultural treatment, pruning and relatively short production time to minimize any risks.
