Cratageus nigra is a species very rare and fairly unknown in Croatia and this paper gives record of the area of its distribution range as well as its phytosociological classification. In Croatia, C. nigra is naturally distributed along the Danube in Baranja. The community in which the species occurs is classified as association Euphorbio palustris-Crategetum nigrae Čarni, Franjić et Škvorc 2004 (Alno-Quercion roboris, Populetalia albae, Querco-Fagetea). The community forms the forest edge together with Common oak stands (Genisto elatae-Quercetum roboris) and poplar forests (Populetum nigrae-alabae). These stands are ocassionally flooded so that deposition and washing away of the alluvium by flood water occurs only at a limited rate.
