Due to its wide variety of potential applications, wood has become one of the most sought-after raw materials. There are a number of reasons for the great importance of wood, but one of the most fundamental is its growing use as a source of energy. There is thus great interest in appraising the future demand for wood in energy production. Austria already has more than a thousand biomass district heating plants in operation and the capacity of new combined heat and power plants is increasing rapidly. This creates a conflict with the wood-processing industries. It is thus important that all of those involved work together to meet these challenges and co-operate to ensure an adequate supply of wood in the future as well.
