There are a great number of valuable approaches of describing the amplitude of demands and tolerances of tree species. Each of these approaches is based on its special reasons, perspectives and advantages - but also limits. Our knowledge of hundreds of suitable woody species and varieties for use in urban areas is by far not yet comprehensive. Here we still meet with a considerable demand on research. And this holds also true because of the abilities - admirable on the one hand and often incalculable on the other - of woody plants for adaptation and optimization at their specific sites, as to which "the previous experience" of the individual plant, the origin of the seed material and the climatic conditions subsequent to planting may play a decisive role.
