This article shows the further developed concept of the Northwest German Forest Research Station (NW-FVA), founded on 1st February 2006. Primarily, purpose, characterisation and history of the department research in Forestry are described. The Forest research is based on the overall model of sustainable and multifunctional forest management. The department research in Forestry has to meet present and future challenges, in order to ensure and enhance the principle of sustainability under changing general conditions. Described challenges are the climate change and changes in site conditions, globalization of wood markets, economic return crises of forest enterprises and increasing requirements of nature conservation. The article points out the research contributions of the NW-FVA in order to meet future challenges and describes the organizational consequences considered at foundation.
