  • Abstract
Mean values of the height of snow-cover along the 26 km long part of the Großglockner High-Mountain-Road extending from above Ferleiten (1300 m a.s.l.) in the north to Kasereck (1913 m) in the south passing Hochtor (2505 m) and along the 8,7 km long glacier-road from Guttal (1859 m) to Franz-Josefs-Height (2369 m) are reported in graphic representations for time periods centered around January 1, January 29, February 26 and April 2. The measurements had been taken once weekly from the winter 1946/47 to the winter 1965/66 at every 100 m in the middle and at the border of the road. From the graphs one can see that due to the topographic features the snow heights show large differences within short distances. To illustrate the ranges of the snow heights the largest and the lowest heights observed in these 20 winters are given at a selection of measuring places, which show to which extent the snow heights may be different at the same time in the various winters. The development of the snow-cover during the course of winter is shown by graphic representations of the 20 year means for each week, which were calculated for selected sites of measurement in different altitudes, above sea level, and of the snow-cover averaged over 500 m road sectors for each week from the end of December to the beginning of April in all parts of the road sections taken into consideration.
