Over the last 25 years there was a marked increase in the sulphate concentration in many water supply wells in Germany. To investigate causes and solutions of water quality problems by high sulphate concentrations in aquifers lysimeter and field investigations have been carried out. The method of "cumulative balance" was developed. It permits to estimate the effect of changing sulphur inputs on sulphate leaching, even the amount of seepage water varies significantly from year to year. Furthermore, based on tracer experiments in different scales, retardation factors for sulphate have been estimated. The degree of retardation increased with the clay content of the soil.
