Bamboo ist the most important multipurpose plant for China, forming a very good substitute for wood, delivering the basis for food, beverage, clothing and medical production. In the recent years cultivation of Bamboo plantations increased else for industrial purposes but also for ecological soil and water protection purposes on landscape level. Considering the extremely high domestic demand for wood and wood similar products especially in the sector pulp and paper production, Bamboo represents for China the green gold of the 21st century. The article provides an overview on the different utilization fields of Bamboo in China and their importance for the domestic economy.
