  • Abstract
Forestry and Wood Industry in China are facing the problem of a high and still increasing timber demand, which actually cannot be covered by domestic production. Consequently, high importance is given to large scale afforestation and the development of substitutes for timber like fast growing bamboo. Considering afforestation, the biomaterial production potential seems to be comparatively low, especially in the dry regions, where the afforestation of shelter belts takes place. The use of bamboo seems to be more promising, considering its fast growth, high biomass production and multipurpose use. Here, research must focus on the question how large scale bamboo cultivation influences the ecological balance of landscapes and thus can affect the sustainability of soil use and raw material production.
