Abstract
According to the question arised in the headline, the article discusses whether a cultivation of Douglas fir on poor sites represents a possible alternative for Scots pine cultivation on glacial bedrock sites in Eastern Germany. First results support the assumption of higher biological activity in forest soils under Douglas fir compared to Scots pine, where an advanced mineralization rate was used as indicator. Future research is demanded to verify, if Douglas fir is able to realize a more efficient site use compared to Scots pine with respect to mobilisation and integration of nutrients into the nutrient cycle.
