  • Abstract
The paper introduces the various questions on operational level for planning an economically efficient conversion out of the view of a small private forest enterprise. The forest enterprise "Helberg" is situated in Lower Saxony on more or less poor sites and was originally dominated by coniferous stands (Scots pine) and consisted partially also in agricultural land instead of forests. Since more than 30 years conversion in this enterprise comprises consequently (1) an afforestation of former agricultural areas and (2) a change in the tree species composition regarding tree species with a higher productivity. Out of the view of the private forest owner, accompanying liming and an intensive precalculation of the capital value seem to be indispensable for guarenteeing the economic success of conversion. As compromise in the stress field economic efficiency and naturally given frame, liming with an equivalent of 3 T7ha CaO as starting melioration and a consequential fertilization according to the development of the regeneration and the soil chemistry were considered as best practice for improving the poor starting situation. Additionally the choice of fast growing tree species with a low sensitively against climatic changes like Red oak, Black locust, Black nut, Douglas fir, and Japanese larch was considered as suitable measure for increasing the revenue in the short run. Regarding approaches for an improvement of the actual silvicultural regime, a change of the regeneration technique, e.g. the substitution of planting by seedling will be taken into consideration.
