  • Abstract
Coming from eastern North America originally, common black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is widly spread in the north east German lowlands. With the on-going change of climate, it will become of higher silvicultural importance particularly in regions of relatively dry climatic conditions (central and south Brandenburg). Beside the ability of binding of nitrogen from the air, black locust is characterised by a number of ecologically valuable qualities. The performance concerning to standing volume and diameter of the species is only moderate; the form of its stems is as a rule "arched". On very good sites, black locust as a "species of economic objective" gets fast into competition to site-native tree species that have to be prioritised here, however. Extensive mixed-crop forests are appropriate forest structure types. New economic using possibilities for black locust arise from its fast-growing at young age and its use as energy wood. As well from this point of view, new specific provenance trails are desirable for yield increase.
