About 1281 species of bees and aculeate wasps are recorded from Germany. A preliminary analysis of their distribution patterns was undertaken to identify species with a special German responsibility for their conservation. A list of 76 such species is presented, among them 39 bees. Bees are the most important pollinators of angiosperms and as "keystone species" of enormous economical and ecological importance. The ecological key position of bees and their positive public image may open up a perspective for a more efficient conservation of the aculeate Hymenoptera in general.
