Abstract
Just a small amount of the apporx. 2.5 billion tons of non-wood plants available each year would be enough to meet the global demand for lignocellulose-based raw materials for the approx. 47 million m3 of MDF produced. Substituting the wood used at the moment, however, would make neither economic or ecological sense, since the realistic use of non-wood plants in economic and ecological term requires certain preconditions to be met. The basis for MDF production from non-wood plants is provided by MDF technology based on wood but of production to work technically requires that the structural and chemical peculiarities of each plant concerned are taken into account. Should the ecological, economic and technological preconditions be met, however, investment in MDF production based on non-wood plants will have been shown to have a future.
