Abstract
There is a high number of wildlife species in the Caspian forests because of its high diversity of habitats, such as 60 mammals, 340 birds, 67 fishes (freswater), 29 reptils and nine amphibians of Iranian fauna. 50 years ago the tiger lived in the Caspian forests, too. After its extintion men took more and more possession of inaccessible parts of the Caspian forest, especially by intensification of woodland pasture. Today there are four nature reserves, eight wildlife reserves, three national memorials and one national park in the Caspian forest, to protect wildlife. By the endeavour to protect wildlife it has been achieved to save some big predators such as the bear, the wolf and the Caspian leopoard. But there is also a need of a high protection level in the future.
