The forest enterprise assocation Kempten was founded in 1969 as response to a declining profitability of wood marketing for the regional small scale forest enterprises. From 1990 on the severe damage and resulting economic losses provoked by the storm "Wiebke", entailed in a professionalization of the management. The success of the upcoming association culminated in 1997 with the establishment of a biomass office (Biomassehof Kempten). Furthermore, common activities like the organisation of submissions and seasonal by-product sales for a more efficient resource building strengthen its commercial stability and profitability. Nowadays, the development of regional trademarks and - as response to the actual demand for a turntable between forest and industrial timber sizing - the establishment of a timber trading company "in silva" are new challenges for the association. The critical factors for such a track record are (1) power through cooperation, (2) fun in forestry as result of economic benefit, and (3) administrative support by an adapted management consultancy. However, the most recent structural reforms in the Bavarian state forest administration are influencing at least the third factor. The future development will show, if the forest enterprise association Kempten and also comparable associations will cut their path despite these changes.
