Abstract
Comparison of ozone concentrations at 3 monitoring stations of the FIW project shows that Rosalia has a much higher pollution level than Schöneben: monthly mean concentrations at Schöeben reach approximately 85 % of the Rosalia levels during winter and only 60 % during summer. The values at the monitoring stations Reiter/Berg and Schlapfkogel 1y between the other two. Characteristic diurnal cycles of concentrations, can be found for different locations: sites in the countryside as a rule show minimum values in the morning, at the time of the minima. With increasing height above the valley floor the diurnal cycle appears to be less pronounced. The highest concentrations of ozone are associated with anticyclones or weak pressure gradients. Thus violations of threshold values occur mainly during physiologically very active periods of plants. Time periods of high levels of ozone are usually terminated by changes of air mass in connection with frontal passages. Whereas these results were expected qualitatively, detailed case studies show that routinely available data and underlying time and space scales are not sufficient to explain all the observed phenomena. The different "ozone effectiveness" of fronts, e.g., is one of the facts which could not be explained sufficiently so far. Therefore it is necessary to link the large and the small space scale and to supplement the meteorological by chemical measurements.
