  • Abstract
A comprehensive concept of sustainable development is supposed to be not only economically efficient. Economic efficiency is restricted by a framework of ecological as well as social constraints. The principle of caution in forest planning forms the heart of a modern sustainability concept. The risk of forest management must therefore be integrated in economic optimisation. Moreover, the planning concept sould be able to consider ecological and social demands. To fulfil this requirements we propose to derive an operational objective function from the utility function of a risk-averse decision-maker. Doing so, risky forest development will automatically be assessed negatively proportional to their risks. ecological and social demands are considered by constraints formulated by the management of experts. The planning problem can be solved based on standard software (EXCEL-Solver) using the non-linear programming facilities of this tool. It is recommended to use the approach proposed in order to demonstrate how the concept of sustainability is addressed in forest management planning.
