Today, evaluation measures are a widely accepted tool in the control and the advancement of public policy. Moreover the aim to shift hierarchical bureaucracies to service oriented public agencies enhanced the necessity of a steady monitoring of customes satisfaction. In contrast ot this development the evaluation of state forest service hunting regimes is predominantly based on criteria indicating the development of game species, vegetation and costs. This restriction is even more surprising as German state forest services follow a diverse number of social objectives. State forest hunting regimes are expected to have an impact on the social structure of hunters, their attitudes and the used hunting techniques. The article explains a scheme for the evaluation of the coherence of public hunting programmes and gives some empirical examples of the social impact of a specific hunting programme on private hunters in a German state forest. Completing some suggestions for the utilisation of the evaluation of the social impact of hunting regimes are made.
