Abstract
In the Weinviertel (Lower Austria) the oak dominated forests are managed as coppice or coppice with standards. During the last two decades there has been a remarkable increase in promoting valuable broadleaved trees specially Wild Service tree. Different case studies (stand inventories, single tree measurements) showed, that the coppice with standards system favours the regeneration of Sorbus torminalis. In the young stand stage tending and mixture regulation is necessary for further development of the young trees. At a dbh of 40 (50) cm Wild Service trees grow up to a height of 14-16 m on drier, less vigorous sites and upt to a height of 18-20 m on vigorous coppice with standards sites. The most important criteria for quality class assessment of the stem up to 5 m is the branchiness. Investigations show a tendency of occurrence of coloured heartwood with increasing age and dbh. For the production of high-quality timber (diameter of 40 (50) cm; branch free bottom log of 5-7 m) a production period of 100-120 years is recommanded. The interrelation of diameter and crown width gives support for the choice of reforestation method, for tending activities and for treatment of plus trees starting in the early pole stage.
