- AbstractIn Scots pine forest ecosystems of the German north-eastern lowlands, evapotranspiration of four ground vegetation types were investigated using newly developed weightable lysimeters (surface 1 m2, depth 1.6 m). In addition, soil water tension, soil moisture, ground vegetation structure, and tree diameter increase were recorded in order to explain the effect of different ground vegetation types on the water budget of the whole ecosystems as well as on tree growth. Evapotranspiration of ground vegetation increase with higher grass coverage. In periods of water shortage, the high water consumption of the ground vegetation of the Calamagrostis epigejos type lead to decreases of plant available soil water storage below a threshold of 40 % water availability. This causes a strong drop of tree growth activity. In periods of summer dryness, ground vegetation dominated by grass species enters phases of strong competition for water with Scots pine, and, thus, regulates tree growth by its high evapotranspiration.
