In the last few decades the nitrate concentration in groundwater in the plains of Austria has increased very dramatically due to the various land uses. Agriculture is reported to be the main source for the high concentration of nitrate in the groundwater. Area, agricultural land use, crop rotation, soil and cliamtic condition are described for the three big watersheds in eastern Austria. Results of long term field measurements are presented. Some proposals for future agricultural land use are made to reduce the nitrate concentration ot the prescribed limits.
